The field guide

5 checks before you pay to enter an award.

The field guide

Next time an award lands in your inbox, run it through this before you reach for a card. Any single flag is a reason to slow down.

1
Can you find the winner rate?If a program won’t say what share of entrants win, assume the answer is “most of them.” Real awards are proud of being selective.
2
Do you have to pay to receive or hold it?Entry fees are normal. Paying to claim the trophy, or a membership to keep the title, is the single clearest mill tell.
3
Are the judges named and independent? An “expert panel” with no names, or judges who work for the people selling entries, means no real evaluation happened.
4
Did they contact you first?A cold “Congratulations, you’ve been selected!” for something you never entered is a sales funnel, not an honor.
5
Is the organizer real and findable?A name, an address, named people, a history. If the whole operation is a landing page and a payment link, you have your answer.

Pass all five? It might be real. Fail one? At minimum, don’t pay until you know why.

Or skip the checklist: we’re grading these so you don’t have to.
