Grade A See the Certification rubric →ISO 14001:2015 is a published EMS standard developed by ISO/TC 207; ISO does not itself certify. Conformity certification is carried out by independent certification bodies accredited to ISO/IEC 17021-1 by national accreditation bodies (ANAB, UKAS, and other IAF MLA signatories). The assessment model is a two-stage initial audit (documentation review plus on-site audit) followed by annual surveillance audits and three-year recertification, scoring the top tier on assessment depth. Because the assessing certification body is independent of and accredited above the paying organization, the fee-for-audit arrangement is the standard independent third-party model and the structural cap does not fire. Criteria (the standard) and process (ISO/IEC 17021-1) are published, and certificates are verifiable through certification-body directories and IAF CertSearch. The only assessed-but-undisclosed item is an aggregate pass/denial rate, which is not centrally published and is therefore removed from the denominator.

ISO does not itself certify organizations; conformity certification is performed by independent certification bodies that are accredited to ISO/IEC 17021-1 by national accreditation bodies (members of the International Accreditation Forum). Certification involves a two-stage initial audit followed by periodic surveillance audits and recertification on a three-year cycle.
