AG Process Grade
Grade A See the Ranking rubric →The Good Food Guide UK uses anonymous, professionally-staffed inspections (inspectors pay their own bills and receive no special treatment, per thegoodfoodguide.co.uk/about/choosing-the-inspectors) combined with reader reports, a model dating to Raymond Postgate's 1951-52 founding and predating Michelin's UK restaurant presence. The Guide states it does not include paid restaurant listings, unlike some competitor guides (Wikipedia: The Good Food Guide). Four leaves (consult-and-rank conflict, badge licensing, weight disclosure, and a formal corrections policy) were not addressed on the pages reviewed and were dashed as genuinely undisclosed; every assessable criterion scored full marks, yielding a 100% grade on assessable points with 15% of total points dashed (below the 40% insufficient-disclosure threshold).
Founded 1951 · The Good Food Guide (currently owned by Adam Hyman, following prior ownership by Waitrose & Partners and the Consumers' Association) · HQ United Kingdom · Food & Beverage · Entry undisclosed
The Good Food Guide was founded by Raymond Postgate, with the first list of recommended restaurants published in 1950/51 and the first full edition in 1952, originally built on reader recommendations. It later added a panel of roughly 30 professional, anonymous inspectors (writers, editors, academics) stationed across the UK who dine as ordinary paying customers and pay their own bills, with no complimentary meals or special treatment. Ownership passed from Postgate to the Consumers' Association (1963), then Waitrose & Partners (2013), then to publisher Adam Hyman (2021); the Guide moved to a continuously-updated digital format with weekly newsletters in 2022. The Guide states it does not sell restaurant listings, contrasting itself with guides that include paid listings.
