Best Law Firms publishes a methodology page describing a consistent process used "since we launched in 2010": confidential client-reference surveys covering experience, responsiveness, cost-effectiveness, civility and referral likelihood; peer-review ballots completed only by currently recognized Best Lawyers attorneys evaluating firms within their specialties; firm-submitted firmographic data; and industry-leader interviews, combined into a tiering system (regional tiers 1-3, national tiers 1-3, and a single Law Firm of the Year per practice area) rather than a strict numeric rank (bestlawfirms.com/methodology). The FAQ states explicitly that "there are no fees to be considered for or receive a ranking," and that badge/reprint licensing is a separate, optional marketing product sold via sales@bestlawyers.com, not a precondition of ranking (bestlawfirms.com/frequently-asked-questions). The site and Wikipedia's Best Lawyers entry establish the publisher's history: founded 1981 as an individual-attorney peer-review directory, acquired by Levine Leichtman Capital Partners in 2018, and partnered with U.S. News & World Report to launch the firm-level Best Law Firms product. The confidential-survey/peer-ballot model means individual placements are not independently reproducible by an outside party from public data, a documented characteristic scored as a kept zero rather than dashed. No public source addresses whether BL Rankings sells paid consulting services to firms about improving their rank, or publishes a formal corrections/update policy, so those two leaves are dashed as genuinely undisclosed after research; combined dashing is 8% of the 100-point scale, well below the 40% ID threshold.

Best Law Firms is an annual tiered ranking of law firms co-published by Best Lawyers (BL Rankings, LLC) and U.S. News & World Report, covering nearly 12,000 firms across 120+ practice areas in the U.S. and several other countries (Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain).
